Spider Identification & Prevention
What Are Spiders?
Spiders are identified by their two body parts - a fused head and thorax, and their abdomen. Spiders have between six and eight eyes, eight legs, no wings, and no antennae.
They do not have chewing mouthparts, but instead use digestive enzymes in their saliva to break down their food before consuming it. These arachnids come in a wide range of sizes and can vary drastically in appearance depending on their exact species.
Some species are smooth and shiny while others are covered in hair. In addition, spiders come in a variety of colors including brown, tan, black, yellow, orange, and red. Lastly, many species of spiders have unique markings or patterns that help set them apart.
Are Spiders Dangerous?
Most spiders aren’t a danger to people because their venom is not strong enough to create any health risks. In general, spiders are shy and reclusive by nature, and they tend to stay hidden away from people.
In fact, spiders usually only bite when they feel threatened, startled, or are being directly handled. While most spiders found living throughout the United States are harmless, some are considered dangerous because their venom is strong enough to cause significant health problems in humans.

Why Do I Have a Spider Problem?
Most species of spiders prefer to live outdoors and have only wandered onto your property because your yard provides them with a plentiful supply of food. Spiders feed on a variety of insects including flies, cockroaches, grasshoppers, and even other spiders. Spiders are also attracted to properties that offer them a variety of places to hide. Some of their favorite places to hunker down in include dark, secluded areas of properties, under piles of debris, and within heavy vegetation.
Where Will I Find Spiders?
Spiders usually nest and hide out in dark, quiet, and out-of-the-way places where they won't be disturbed. When living outdoors, they make their webs or burrows in areas of tall grass, in bushes and shrubs, in between rocks, underneath decks and porches, in gardens and wood piles, and in the corners of doorways.
Spiders often find their way inside following the insects they feed on. Inside, they are commonly found living in homes and garages, spinning webs inside sheds and barns, and in other outbuildings, and hiding in the corners of dark quiet areas such as basements, closets, attics, crawl spaces, and under furniture.
